AUTO - SKODA OCTAVIA COMBI, ESTATE VERSION COMING SOON

Skoda Octavia Combi estate car for India

BY A CORRESPONDENT

23 August, 2005: It was supposed to be launched in May, and now we hear October being mentioned. Frankly, we have no real idea when the Skoda Octavia Combi is going to be launched. That kind iof detail should not stop us going ahead with announcing the launch of the Skoda Octavia in India, right?

Well, we hear October 2005. Give a month or two on top of that.

Is the estate going to work? Fact is, even Skoda may not know. It is going to be India's first premium class luxury estate car. Luxury estate? That may not gell well with many, but who knows. The other successful estate car in India - the Indigo Marina sells reasonably well, and it had the success of the Indica and Indigo to build on. The Skoda Octavia Combi has the success of the Octavia Ambiente, Elegance, Rider, RS and all the other myriad petrol, diesel and turbo petrol Octavias to build on. It could well work, guys.

The car will come with a 150 bhp turbo 1800cc petrol engine and a 1900cc, 90 bhp turbodiesel. Pricing could be a bit higher than the regular comparable notchback variants. The Combi definitely looks good in that Skoda kinda way - meaning, well-designed steel bricks. You like the Octavia, you will like the Octavia Combi. Length increases by 6 mm only, and only 30 kgs of added weight to lug around. The Octavia Combi will offer 548 litres of boot, compared to the 528 litres of the regular Octavia. Fold the rear seat, and you get enough space to carry a Fabia around - 1512 litres, according to Skoda.

We will keep you updated on this. Meanwhile, take a look at the pictures.
